Cardiff Academicals F.C. - A history

Founded on the 15th April 1979.


The Club name is taken from Hamilton Academicals FC whose score against Forfar Athletic was was being read out on television at the time.

The first kit was claret and blue (a la Aston Villa 1972) and was bought for just £19.

The first league game was on 7th September  v Trelai Youth Centre,losing 5 - 1.

In 1980/81 the club gained promotion and a second team was formed.

In 1984 The club won an award for sportsmanship from the South Wales FA.

As the players grew older it became obvious that a Veterans team had to be formed - this was around 2003.

The club twice winners of Veterans’ International Tournament - 2005,2008

The Club has hosted Veterans’ International Tournaments - 2003,2007,2013, 2015, 2016

In 2008 the The Veterans represented Wales in a 6 a side tournament at the University Masters World Cup in Switzerland, finishing 5th out of 10.

2008 The Veterans won Division 4 of the Bristol Casuals League.

2009 The Veterans won promotion to Division 2 of the Bristol Casuals League.

2009 The Veterans play a match against Ajax Veterans at the Dutch club’s Training Centre.

2010 The Veterans gain promotion to Division 1 of Bristol Casuals League and tour Antibes in France finishing 10th of 14.

2011 The Veterans host the Czech National Old Boys in Cardiff, and tour to Prague where they play Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague.

2012 March - Veterans tour to to Portugal - played Sporting Lisbon and Benfica.

2012 The Veterans host the Boston Braves, USA in Cardiff (drew 1-1).

2013 The Veterans toured Spain and played Barcelona and Espanyol.

2013 June - Host an International tournament for the Czechs, Ajax, Cardiff City, Wales Veterans, Northern Ireland Veterans, Hungerford Town and Old Parmitarians.

2014 Tour to Germany to play Bayer Leverkusen and local team Schlebusch.

2015 May - Tour to Hungary to play the Veterans of the top 3 teams in Hungary - Ferencvaros, Ujpest and MTK Budapest.

2015 June - hosted an International tournament - Liberec Czechs, Schlebusch, Cardiff City and Wales Veterans.

2016 Tour to Denmark/Sweden - playing FC Copenhagen, Lyngby and Malmo.

2016 June - hosted an International - Sparta Prague, Bayer Leverkusen, MTK Budapest, Cardiff City and Wales Veterans.

2017 June - Tour to Switzerland to play FC Lucerne, Grasshopper Zurich and FC Zurich.

2017 November - tour to Iceland to play an Invitational 6 a side tournament in Reykjavik.
